Learning about coaching

  • Coaches ask in order to explore, while consultants ask in order to tell.
  • A good coach know "how to" ask questions, but not only "what" to ask.
    • ask "what" questions instead of "why". ask "what is on your mind" instead of "why is this on your mind".
    • avoid asking rhetorical questions: "Did you consider...?" or "Have you thought about..?"
  • Ask AWE questions: "And what else"
  • Coaching for development is about turning the focus from the "issue" to the "person" dealing with the issue.
  • Focus on the "development" not the "performance". Performance is important, but you won't empower your team if you're constantly putting out small fires and forgetting the larger goals.
  • Develop a deep listening skill
