Dirndl, the traditional cloth that's not so traditional

Some people say that, Dirndl makes every girl more attractive. The design of the dress does have the effect of emphasizing the famine features.

During the 2 weeks time of Octoberfest, Munich looks really like a big village in a different time era. Even some business men/women tucked away their suits and wearing the "traditional" outfit instead. Once I called it "costume" and got some serious complaints from my German colleague,  "It's not "costume", it's our real traditional clothing..". It's pretty right with the Lederhosen (leather trousers) for men, but unfortunately not so right for Dirndl.

The Dirndl, the dress which prevails the Octoberfest ground, was designed for convenience to work in the field our household, instead of showing off female traits. With the tightness of modern design, one can hardly eat or drink, not to mention to work in a field.

According to the article here, Dirndl appeared  firstly in 1972 Olympic game as a trade mark of Munich. However according to the article, the dress became popular after it's seen in the Opera piece, "white horse" and been promoted by local manufactures.

There are three important parts of Dirndl:

Mieder (bodice),Schürze (apron) and Rock (skirt, but actually it's an one piece dress). The upper part of dress is made by harder fabric to be able to push up breasts. One usually wears a special Bra under the bodice.

Where the knot of the apron is tied is not a simple matter. Dirndl subject became so famous, even the local bakeries use the bow tie to make a story. In the card shown here, when one ties the knot on the right hand side, it says (translated from Bavarian), "I'd like to test it, but I can't". When the knot is tied on the left hand side, it says, "to have a bit is always ok". When the knot is tied in the center front, it says here, "Let's see what we have".
There's another version of center knot interpretation, saying that "I am a virgin". I personally found that interpretation interesting but hard to believe. Or maybe it's the only time of the year that everyone feels comfortable to go around to tell the others that she is a virgin?

Anyway nowadays Dirndl has become so popular, that they are also worn at other celebration occasions such as weddings. Another example is the "Almabtrieb", when the famers in the Alps drive the cows from the mounts to the ground around October time. It's kind of different flavor though.
